Lawn care maintenance and grass care to keep your lawns looking amazing

Keeping your lawns looking luscious and green requires ongoing maintenance. Without regular care, your lawn may end up dry, lifeless and infested with weeds and diseases.

Once you have received a grass seeding service from the team at It's Grass, follow the below steps to keeping your lawn in a healthy and attractive condition.

Do you require additional help to keep your lawns healthy? Our Premium Lawn Care membership ensures that your lawns are mowed, fertilised and sprayed on a regular basis.

1) Watering your lawn

You will need to ensure your lawn is kept moist, not soaking wet, just nicely moist.

So if it is not otherwise raining you should water lawn in the early morning for best results as the seeds water uptake is greater in the morning hours (20 – 30 mins should suffice) and allow the water to penetrate to 175mm or so to promote good root growth.

On particularly hot days another watering late afternoon or early evening would be advised. Don’t let the lawn dry out  as this will allow the seeds to die.

Ongoing water to your lawn is a requirement and will need to be addressed with your lawn care professional.

It is important not to over or under water your lawn, as under watering means your grass will die or struggle and over watering will rot your grass and promote moss and disease.

If your existing grass is completely dry and unattractive, talk to It's Grass about what options you have for replacing your existing grass.

2) Mowing your lawn

Let your grass grow to approximately 100mm (4 inches) or just before it starts to fall over on itself.

On your first cut only take 20mm off, so just a light trim.

Next cut take off 20mm and progressively down to no less than 25mm (1 inch) or more in hot dry conditions.

Cutting the grass too low can result in killing the grass and promoting weeds, so ensure you stick to the above guidelines.

3) Fertilising your lawn

Although your hydroseeded lawn comes with added slow release fertiliser, every new lawn is extremely hungry for nutrients when it is growing and establishing, so around 4 – 6 weeks it will need another good dressing of a Nitrogen rich lawn fertiliser, which includes most well known lawn fertiliser brands.

Keep this up every month in the Spring and Autumn growing seasons and maybe once or twice through summer and once in winter.

Detailed advice will need to be customised with your lawn care professional - contact It's Grass today for further information.

4) Preventing weeds and diseases in your lawn

A healthy well watered and well fertilised lawn will promote healthy grass which leaves weeds little chance of getting established.

When weeds or diseases do get a hold from wind or bird distribution it will need to be treated with a herbicide, fungicide or pesticide as recommended by your lawn care professional.
